Feed Quality and Durability: How to Optimize Your Feeding Program

The healthy growth and high performance of animals are directly linked to the quality of the feed used in their feeding programs. Feed quality is not just about nutritional value; it also includes physical durability, freshness, and shelf life. Durable feeds make the feeding process more efficient and reduce waste.

High-quality animal feed pellets demonstrating durability and structural integrity

Problem

Feed deterioration, crumbling pellets and oxidation reduce nutrient intake and animal performance.

Why it happens

Poor pellet integrity and oxidation degrade feed quality, especially in humid and hot storage conditions.

What to check first

Pellet durability, storage environment, freshness, and antioxidant protection.

Feed quality has a direct impact on the health and productivity of animals. High-quality feed improves digestion, strengthens the immune system, and ensures animals benefit fully from nutrients. Low-quality feed can lead to digestive disorders, weakened immunity, and reduced growth.

Feed Durability and Pellet Integrity

Feed durability depends on technologies and ingredients used during production. Pellet binders maintain feed integrity and prevent dust formation, reducing feed losses and improving consumption efficiency.

The Pellet Durability Index (PDI): How Feed Mills Measure Pellet Quality

The Pellet Durability Index (PDI) is the standard metric feed mills use to quantify how well pellets survive handling, storage and transport. It is expressed as the percentage of pellets that stay intact after a sample is mechanically agitated. Under the widely referenced ASAE S269.4 tumbling-box method, a 500 g sample of pre-sifted pellets is tumbled for 10 minutes and then re-sifted; the PDI is the weight of intact pellets divided by the original sample weight, expressed as a percentage.

There is no single universal pass mark — durability targets are set by species, diet and how far the feed has to travel — but pellets scoring in the high-90s are generally regarded as durable, while lower scores signal excessive fines, dust and nutrient segregation before the feed reaches the animal. Every percentage point of fines is feed that was paid for but never eaten.

The practical levers that raise PDI include finer grinding of raw materials, correct steam conditioning (moisture and temperature), appropriate die specification (L/D ratio), controlled fat inclusion, and — often the most cost-effective lever — a dedicated pellet binder. A guar-based binder such as GuarBind strengthens inter-particle bonding in the die, lifting PDI, cutting fines and protecting feed conversion (FCR) without diluting the ration's nutritional density.

Freshness and Antioxidant Protection

Synthetic antioxidants preserve freshness and prevent oxidative deterioration, extending shelf life and maintaining nutritional value. This ensures animals continuously consume high-quality feed and reduces waste.

Fresh feed is essential for performance, especially in hot and humid environments where spoilage occurs quickly. Antioxidant protection stabilizes feed and improves animal resilience.

Nutritional Approach

Improving feed quality requires both physical stabilization and oxidative protection.

Combining pellet binders with antioxidant solutions ensures durability, maintains nutritional value and supports consistent animal performance.
